It stops whenever the wind is too strong, sometimes for days, and closes for about two weeks of maintenance each winter (27 July to 9 August in 2026). Yes, but know what it is: the day safaris go to fenced private reserves such as Aquila, about two hours’ drive inland. They are malaria-free and you can see the Big Five, but it is not the open bush of Kruger, which is a flight away.

On the Atlantic side (Clifton, Camps Bay) the water is cold even in summer, often around 14–18 °C. False Bay beaches such as Muizenberg and Fish Hoek are usually 4–6 °C warmer. Cape Town is a coast for looking at, hiking along and surfing in a wetsuit, not a tropical beach holiday.

For the Winelands a tour is the sensible choice, because nobody has to drive after the tastings. The Cape Peninsula is easy to drive yourself and gives you more time at each stop. Safaris and shark trips almost always include transfers.
