Good to know: September and October give the most reliable sightings. Outside the season a Hermanus trip is a pretty coastal drive, not a whale trip – check the month before you book.

Frequently asked questions

What if the Table Mountain cable car is closed?

It stops whenever the wind is too strong, sometimes for days, and closes for about two weeks of maintenance each winter (27 July to 9 August in 2026). Plan the mountain for your first clear, calm day rather than your last. A guided hike up Platteklip Gorge or Lion’s Head runs in conditions that stop the cable car.

Will I really see great white sharks on a cage dive?

Much less likely than the photos suggest. Great white sightings in Gansbaai and False Bay have dropped sharply in recent years, a decline linked to orcas that hunt them. Boats now often show bronze whaler (copper) sharks instead. Ask the operator about current sighting rates and their policy if no shark appears.

When is the best time to see whales?

Southern right whales come to Walker Bay at Hermanus from about June to November, with the most reliable sightings in September and October. Hermanus is roughly 120 km and an hour and a half by car from Cape Town, so a whale trip takes most of a day.

Can I do a real safari from Cape Town?

Yes, but know what it is: the day safaris go to fenced private reserves such as Aquila, about two hours’ drive inland. They are malaria-free and you can see the Big Five, but it is not the open bush of Kruger, which is a flight away.

Can I swim in the sea in Cape Town?

On the Atlantic side (Clifton, Camps Bay) the water is cold even in summer, often around 14–18 °C. False Bay beaches such as Muizenberg and Fish Hoek are usually 4–6 °C warmer. Cape Town is a coast for looking at, hiking along and surfing in a wetsuit, not a tropical beach holiday.

Do I need a car, or is a tour better?

For the Winelands a tour is the sensible choice, because nobody has to drive after the tastings. The Cape Peninsula is easy to drive yourself and gives you more time at each stop. Safaris and shark trips almost always include transfers.
